[Virtual] Communicating Sustainability

It is a common trend today for both multinationals, local companies, and various organisations to use their influence to improve social and environmental well-being. This has made communicating sustainability or impact relations more critical. One clear strategy is communicating your positive change management and impact on the environment and your contributions to climate change goals.

Sustainability communication is a pivot in business, social and environmental innovation. It is the practice of widely sharing messages, stories and ideas that result in positive impact. It strives on transparent, authentic, meaningful and resonant communications to inspire stakeholders with substantive commitment to social, environmental and ethical responsibility.

A. Understanding sustainability and its application to corporates and organisations

- The 3 pillars of Sustainability (Environment, Society and Economy)

- United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  • Importance and benefits of sustainability to corporates and organisations
  • Setting local context

- Singapore government’s agenda: raise examples and use case studies of the Singapore Green Plan 2030 and Budget 2022

- SGX mandated sustainability reporting for listed companies


 B. Reporting your sustainability goals


  • How to identify sustainability goals?

Stakeholder engagement

- Materiality assessment

  • How to report?

​- Broadly introduce 3 most commonly adopted sustainability reporting frameworks

- Zoom into GRI Standards (most commonly adopted + popular framework)


C. Communicating your valuable contributions to national and community goals


  • Some steps that PR practitioners can take to help their clients/company with communicating sustainability to a wider audience

About The Trainer

Audrey Tan is a sustainability practitioner with nearly 10 years of combined experience in the corporate and educational fields. She started her career in Singtel where she led sustainability efforts within the business and community. Her passion then led her to a teaching career at Republic Polytechnic (RP) where she developed the Business and Sustainability module as part of RP’s Diploma in Business.  

Audrey was part of the pioneer batch of Sustainability Professionals Programme by Global Compact Network Singapore. She is GRI Certified in GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards. She was recently invited by Market Research Society Singapore to speak at their International Market Research Day 2022 webinar on the topic of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and business sustainability.

 Audrey graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences (Communications and New Media).
